Comments: Remembering my brother, Robert G. Eiland, who passed on January 2, 1011 in Sacramento,CA. His experiences during WWII in the 3rd Division, 7th Inf., were probably the highlight of his 94 yrs. He wrote a book about that time called "Sometimes It Was a Fascinating War." If you had know him you would understand the title. It is available on Amazon.com I believe. I never tired of talking to him about that time (I am his baby sister!). There will be a burial service for him at Arlington on Feb. 10th (his wife has already been interred there).

Comments: I am attempting to revive attempts to upgrade to a Medal of Honor the Distinguished Service Cross awarded to PVT MARIO POMPONIO, who was killed in France in 1944. Private Pomponio single-handedly knocked out two German machine gun nests and and took some 10 German soldiers prisoners in the French town of Wihr-en-Plaine on the morning of 30 January 1945. He was a member of 3rd Platoon, E Co., 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regt., 3rd Infantry Division and miraculously survived the assualt without being wounded, only to lose his life in subsequent action two days later. As you would imagine, getting the U.S. Army, not to mention the U.S. Congress, off the dime to honor men like PVT Pomponio is no small feat. But I am committed to re-submitting a MOH package through official channels to obtain this honor for this 18-year-old kid who gave his life for his country and his fellow Soldiers. If anyone has any information concerning this incident, please contact me at sendthenavy@aol.com. Thank you.
Comments: If anyone remembers David R "Mickey" Gurganus from Korea i would appreciate communication. He was my stepfather. Wounded on 9 March 1952 in NK by rocket/mortar he passed away in 1976 after constantly battling shrapnel dislodgements throughout his body leading to heart attack. It was because of his service as a veteran i was able to pay for college. Thanky you and Bless you all for your service. |
